Nurture a more caring,gracious & inclusive society.

It was heartening to read 13-year-old Kate Yeo's letter ("Protect workers from the haze"; Sept 23).
Such compassion for others less fortunate than herself is indeed commendable for such a young girl. I compliment her parents for bringing her up well.
It is sad that many children in Singapore care only about themselves. Parents should do more to bring their children up with a greater sense of compassion.
It is upsetting to see schoolchildren on the MRT busy playing games on their mobile devices, not bothering to look up to see if anyone needs a seat more than they do.
We need to instil good values in children from a young age, so that we can nurture a more caring, gracious and inclusive society.
